Protect cultural heritage

China Daily | Updated: 2009-12-05 07:14

Although a recent survey of cultural heritage sites revealed nothing surprising, we are nevertheless shocked at the extent of destruction of these cultural relics due to rampant urbanization.

More than 30,000 registered sites of cultural and historical value will have to be deleted from the national cultural heritage inventory. This has happened in a little more than two decades since the last survey of the kind was undertaken in 1985. It is a pity these sites no longer exist.

These decades were the period when the country urbanized rapidly. Almost all cities, big or small, started to sport a new look, with some changing within just a few months.
